Valley of Fire Day 2

Cloudy today but no rain. There might be some tonight but the rest of the week will be sunny. I worked some areas close to the road but there was a lot of wind and I was not happy getting sandblasted and was worried about my camera equipment as well. I stopped to look at a potential place to shoot tomorrow and when trying to restart my car (I call my car Rusty), the steering wheel locked up, as did the ignition and gears. A nice couple from WA gave me a ride to the Visitor's Center so I could call the AAA. The park supervisor wanted to see if he could release it so we headed back to where I was while waiting for the AAA. No luck so back to the Visitor's Center we went. An old tow truck with its older, little bit of a man showed up and it became clear early on that he really knew what he was doing. Thank heavens since I was worried that my front wheel drive could be wrecked if he wasn't careful. After all the wheels were totally locked. Roger was his name and he was not only very good and careful he was very pleasent. On the way out, the sun broke through and since it was close to sunset, the effect was stunning on the red rocks. Even Roger was taken by the sight and jokingly asked if I'd drive so he could look at the scenery.

Rusty is across the street from the hotel and I won't know until tomorrow what ails him or when he will be ready to drive again. I'm glad I'm here for a few days. It will probably do me good to lay low tomorrow since the bronchitis is not getting any better. I'm just trying to ignore it.

Valley of Fire Day 1

I thought I might not make to the Valley of Fire. Bronchitis, a sinus infection and an infected toe almost keep me in Reno. But I made the drive yesterday and spent part of my 60th birthday roaming through the Valley's splendor today. In the morning I just drove around and then went back again towards to day's end. Although I enjoyed seeing the wave (photos above and below), taking the .5 mile stroll to it was not my most brilliant move. Until I get rid of the bronchitis, I am going to stay close to the road. Given that much of the beauty of the park does not require hikiing far, I'll still have plenty of photo ops. There's a possibility of thunderstorm tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed. Not only am I drooling for the opportunity of capturing lightening, but I can wait to see the rocks wet. They will be even more gorgeous! By the way, I know I broke the rule of thirds rule in the above photo but sometimes...

A few more Birds from January

When I was at Colusa NWR in Jan, there were lots of folks there trying to either see or photograph the Falcated Duck that was "visiting" from Asia. Clearly he had taken quite a few wrong turns. The female Falcated Duck resembles the female American Widgeon so he was also trying to steal a lady from time to time. He is above. One of these days I'll process some of the photos of him doing his display routine.

Below are some other favorite shots. A Northern Pintail fanning and a Ring Necked Duck.

I am leaving Friday to spend a week (and my 60th birthday) in the Valley of Fire. I've wanted to go back there for years. I doubt many bird photos will be taken but ya' never know since the Overton Wildlife Management Area is nearby.
